The Abbey Monastery is the crown jewel of buildings in the Canon City area. Built by the Benedictine Monks in the 1920's, this is a 200 acre tract of land with many interesting features, one of which is the winery. The Abbey winery is open every day in the summer, and produces excellent products from the area gardens and truck farms. The Monastery is open for inspection, and has a gift shop, a hostel type accommodation for tourists and other amenities. Please take time to investigate this wonderful building.
In contrast to the Abbey Monastery in Canon City, this is the first church in Western Fremont County, the Free Methodist Church pastered by Thomas Vipond and many other itinerant preachers down through the decades. It is now a museum/gathering place owned by the Western Fremont Historical Society. To reach this jewel, you will drive to Howard, Colorado along Highway 50 and turn on County Road 4, North, winding to the left as you cross the Railroad tracks. If you would like to contact someone about this church, there are members of the Society available.
Fremont County Heritage Commission
The Fremont County Heritage Commission will be asking everyone in Fremont County to join them in celebrating the Sesquicentennial. The County was designated while Colorado was still a Territory, in 1861.
If you are having an event, please include a theme of 150 years.
"Deputy Warden's House", Burghart House, C-House
The Deputy Warden's house which sits at the corner of 1st Street and Main Street in Canon City has been nominated for an Endangered Site by the Fremont County Heritage Commission. This house was built in 1901 by inmates of the prison of native stone. It is now the property of the Department of Corrections, State of Colorado, but a project in the works is to have the City of Canon City take over the property and add it to the Prison Museum as either business offices or a bed and breakfast.
We support the mission and purposes of the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center and promote awareness of our heritage.
